Ship Burning & Never Looking Back (A Poem)

A photo I took on a hike along the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland

This is a poem I wrote inspired by a retreat I was part of called BraveSoul held by my mentor Philip McKernan. It was a powerful, life changing experience.

The sheer beauty of Ireland’s west coast, the warmth from the people and powerful insights and lifelong bonds made during this retreat are unforgettable.

Enjoy!

Standing at the edge of a one way trip
I look back in fear at the burned up ships
Wood drowning in the sea, wrapped in firey sails
The only way back, now no longer there

Who we were, what we knew
Becomes a blur, an old faint ghost
Ahead a journey and left unsure
Will we see our fate or in fact endure

A thousand miles we walk
with no assurance of ever finding
Food, a drink or good weather

Legs now, like two big rocks
Eyes so weary, on our knees
We begin to drop

Embarking in the journey
Our hope nearly ripped apart
And still we place one foot in front of the other
And do what others have not

With the only sight left in our mind’s eye
It fuels a fire that still lies deep inside
Though the battle be physically, emotionally fought
It’s our souls, our hearts that will make the difference of winning or not
In the end, it is always the Brave who do
