Oliver has three main focuses when teaching yoga and mindfulness:
Insight Practice
Oliver teaches that attention and mental focus are our most valuable resources. Each day the forces of the world through technology are constantly fighting for our precious attention. Beyond that, inside each one of us are different parts that can rob us of it too.
There is a lower self, most commonly related to Ego, Survival Mechanism, or Resistance. This part likes to operate from fear and survival and is reactionary. There is also a higher self, sometimes considered Essence, Inner Child, or True Self. This is the part that operates from intuition, purpose, and wholeness. Neither is good or bad. All parts serve a purpose but must be managed and developed.
Insight Practice expands your capacity for focus and attention through meditation and present-moment awareness. This is a fundamental component to help you work through, process, and integrate the higher and lower self. This means that in real time, you are enabled to reinvent your relationship with these parts so that you can notice, choose, and manage how you show up in the world. This leads to a greater sense of calm, peace, and purposefulness.
Movement Practice
Connected to mental energy is physical energy. We are all constantly exchanging energy in our day-to-day lives. Our bodies are the vehicle that transmits, absorbs, and expresses this energy. There are times when you might be blocked, face resistance, and have trouble processing aspects of daily life and this energy gets trapped in the body. There are times when you need energy but lack it, or are on the road to burnout. Through movement practices like yoga, you have access to a toolset that can generate, liberate and transmute the energy into better self-awareness understanding, and personal performance.
Through non-doing practices like play or rest, you can recover and recapture your energy levels for the upcoming day. This practice helps create flexibility, strength, and balance in the body so you have greater access to working on the mind.
Art of Living
Ultimately, the movement and insight practices are designed so that you can experience more aliveness in your day-to-day life. Oliver’s students and clients are not destined to be monks or live in a cave to chant “om” at all hours of the day.
